Sustainable lighting (Ecuador)

Many Indian communities in the Andes and the Amazon are not connected to the electricity grid or suffer from power blackouts. The use of oil-lamps is common but dangerous, as the fumes are a health hazard for children. They are also inadequate as a source of light for studying in the evening.

As a solution, The WakaWaka Foundation has developed the WakaWaka, a safe and sustainable solar LED lamp. There is also a version that can charge mobile phones.

Sustainable Solutions is setting up a network of labour unions and other local organisations to distribute the WakaWaka among Indians, small farmers and plantation workers in Ecuador.
